Monday traded 1,008m, matching the 27 July session that started the rebound as the heaviest tape of the recovery, and the mix was emphatic - 707m in advancing names against 298m in declining ones - even as 241 names fell. The concentration did the reconciling: CNERGY's 313m at 9.72% and DSIL's 125m at the 10% limit down were together more than two-fifths of the session. Around CNERGY the energy prints stacked up - SSGC 24m at 5.17%, PSO 22m at 8.94%, PRL 20m at its circuit, PPL 11m at 3.65%, NRL 8m at 6.71% - and ASL rose 7.34% on 13m. DSIL's fall was its third straight session down 9.9% or more, on its heaviest volume of the three. Away from those two poles the board was quiet: KEL turned 31m at 1.36%, WTL 29m at 1.65% and SLM 28m barely changed at 0.12%, while bank trade thinned right out, BOP's 7m at -0.17% the sector's heaviest print.

Sector micro-analysis

The energy chain took the whole of the leaderboard. The Refinery sector's 8.74% - all four names up, CNERGY 9.72%, ATRL 8.52%, NRL 6.71% and PRL at the 10% circuit - nearly matched its 9.28% surge of 10 August, and the difference is that the complex around it joined in this time: Oil and Gas Marketing rose 2.51% with seven of nine higher on PSO's 8.94%, SSGC's 5.17% and SNGP's 3.40%, and the Oil and Gas Exploration companies added 1.37% with no decliners on PPL's 3.65%. Synthetic and Rayon rose 5.08% and Chemical 1.16%. The rest of the board drifted lower in small moves: Transport fell 1.83%, Sugar and Allied Industries 0.82% and Textile Composite 0.62% with 19 of 32 names down, while Cement closed flat at 0.02% with three up and 14 down. The financials that sold off on Thursday steadied rather than recovered - Commercial Banks eased 0.23%, the securities complex 0.26% against Thursday's 1.30% drop, and Insurance 0.49%.

Foreign investors were net sellers of PKR 521.56m (USD 1.9m); local investors were net buyers of PKR 521.56m. the internals read as the market's buying power funnelling into a single complex while the broad board eased. Up-volume of 707m ran more than twice the 298m in declining names on the recovery's joint-heaviest tape, yet 241 names fell against 174 - the same positive-volume, negative-breadth signature as Thursday, stretched further. The KMI-30's 0.64% gain led the KSE-30's 0.29% and the KSE-100's 0.22%, the Shariah gauge's heavy energy weighting marking the rotation's destination, and the concentration kept building: CNERGY's 313m topped its 273m of 28 July as the heaviest single-name session of the rebound, and with DSIL's 125m limit-down the two poles of the session were more than two-fifths of everything traded. The financials, Thursday's source of supply, went quiet rather than bid - bank turnover thinned to BOP's 7m as the sector eased 0.23%.

Outlook

  • •The index has now closed above 180,000 three sessions running - 180,311.21, 180,104.61 and Monday's 180,502.44 - and sits about 3.71% below the 6 July record of 187,454.69, with the level that broke on 11 August holding as the floor of the range.
  • •The refinery trade did not fade over the holiday weekend, it accelerated and broadened: Thursday's 4.65% surge had come with the E&Ps 0.25% lower, while Monday's 8.74% brought the chain with it - Oil and Gas Marketing up 2.51% and the Oil and Gas Exploration companies 1.37% with no decliners.
  • •The advance is resting on ever fewer, ever heavier prints - CNERGY's 313m at 9.72% topped its 273m of 28 July as the heaviest single-name session of the rebound and, with DSIL's 125m, made more than two-fifths of a 1,008m tape - while 241 of 438 names closed lower beneath the headline gain.

What to watch

  • •Whether Monday's 8.74% refinery surge holds into Tuesday - the sector's 9.28% jump of 10 August gave back 1.5% the next session, though Thursday's 4.65% rise did carry through the holiday weekend into Monday's advance
  • •Whether the energy bid keeps broadening - PSO's 8.94% and SSGC's 5.17% carried Oil and Gas Marketing to 2.51% and the E&Ps swept green, where Thursday's refinery surge had left the E&Ps 0.25% lower
  • •Whether DSIL finds a floor - a third straight session down 9.9% or more, this one at the 10% limit on 125m, its heaviest volume of the slide
  • •USD/PKR, SBP rate signals and the global crude tape
